Flux 2 Pro vs Max: Prices, Free Options and Which to Use

Black Forest Labs released FLUX.2 on 25 November 2025 in four versions, two of them with open weights. Pro is the everyday paid model, Max the highest-quality tier. What each costs, which are free, how Flux 2 compares with Nano Banana Pro, and what the Studio charges. Checked on 12 October 2026.

Flux 2 Pro vs Max: Prices, Free Options and Which to Use

Short answer first. Flux 2 Pro is Black Forest Labs' everyday production model, cheap enough to iterate on and available up to 4K in the Studio. Flux 2 Max is the highest-quality tier of the family, and the only one that can search the web for real-time context while it generates. In the Studio, Pro costs 3 credits for a 1K image and Max costs 5.

Start on Pro. Move to Max when a frame has earned a final pass and the extra 2 credits are worth spending on it.

What FLUX.2 Is

Black Forest Labs announced FLUX.2 on 25 November 2025 as a family rather than a single model. Three versions launched that day and a fourth was listed as coming soon:

  • [pro], the fully managed production model.
  • [flex], which exposes the step count and guidance scale so developers can trade speed against quality. Black Forest Labs says it "excels at rendering text and fine details".
  • [dev], a 32B open-weight model that handles text-to-image and multi-image editing in one checkpoint.
  • [klein], a smaller model distilled from the FLUX.2 base, announced for Apache 2.0.

[max] arrived afterwards as the top tier, with grounding search that only it supports. BFL's examples include images built around recent football scores or the current weather in a city.

Across the family, Black Forest Labs claims reference editing with up to 10 images at once, output and editing at up to 4 megapixels, and "complex typography, infographics, memes and UI mockups with legible fine text" that "now work reliably in production". Those are the maker's claims, not our test results.

Flux 2 vs Flux 1

FLUX.2 is the newer generation, and every claim above is framed by BFL against what came before: more reference images, higher resolution, more reliable text. We replaced FLUX1.1 [pro] with Flux 2 Pro in the Studio when FLUX.2 shipped, because the older model was a generation behind, and the old model is now retired from the picker. Older FLUX.1 releases remain on BFL's own list, including the Kontext editing models, if you have a pipeline built on them.

Pro vs Max, Side by Side

Two notes on that table. Max has no 4K tier because fal, the provider the Studio runs it through, caps its custom sizes at 2560 pixels a side. And grounding search is a feature of BFL's own API; the Studio does not switch it on, so Max in the Studio is the quality tier without the web lookup.

FLUX.2 also has no batch setting, so each run returns one image. If you want four options, that is four runs.

What a Flux 2 Image Costs

fal bills Flux 2 Pro by the megapixel: "$0.03 for the first megapixel of output, plus $0.015 per extra megapixel of input and output", rounded up. Reference images count as input megapixels, so on fal a heavy edit costs more than a plain generation at the same size. The Studio charges one flat price per size either way.

The Studio prices against that rate, so the steps you see are real cost steps, not flat upcharges:

SizeFlux 2 ProFlux 2 Max
1K3 credits5 credits
2K6 credits9 credits
4K15 creditsnot offered

For comparison on the same roster, the cheapest image on GPT Image 2.5 Flare or SeeDream 5 Lite is also 3 credits, while a 1K image costs 4 on Nano Banana 2.1 and 9 on Nano Banana Pro. The Render Ledger shows the provider cost next to each credit price.

Is Flux 2 Free, and Is It Open Source?

Two versions are open. FLUX.2 [klein] 4B is released under Apache 2.0, which Black Forest Labs describes as fully open, and runs locally from Hugging Face. FLUX.2 [dev] has open weights that are free for non-commercial use; commercial use needs a licence from BFL. FLUX.2 [klein] 9B carries the FLUX Non-Commercial licence.

Pro, Flex and Max are closed. They run through BFL's API and partners such as fal, and are paid per image.

In the Studio, a little every day. Free accounts are topped up to 9 credits a day until their first credit pack, with no card. That covers three Flux 2 Pro images at 1K, or one Flux 2 Max image. Free images carry a small watermark, which any pack removes. Our guide to the best free AI image generators in 2026 compares that with running klein yourself or using the other free tiers.

So "Flux 2 vs Flux 2 klein" is mainly a question of where it runs. Klein is the version you can download and run on your own hardware. Pro is the managed version you pay for per image and never have to host.

Flux 2 vs Nano Banana Pro

The comparison gets searched a lot, and we have not run a controlled test of the two, so here is what can be said without one.

On price, Flux 2 Pro is the cheaper model at every size the two share: 3 credits against 9 at 1K, 6 against 9 at 2K, 15 against 18 at 4K. On edits, Nano Banana Pro takes up to 14 input images in the Studio and Flux 2 takes 9. Google positions Pro for high-fidelity work that needs maximum factual accuracy, and our Nano Banana guide covers where it earns its price.

The sensible way to find out is cheap: one brief, one image on each, at 1K. That is 12 credits for the pair.

How to Use Flux 2 Well

  • Iterate on Pro at 1K, finish on Max or at 2K. The composition is decided at 1K; only the final frame needs the expensive pass.
  • Give it references for anything that must match. Up to nine images can carry a product, a face or a palette into the edit, and FLUX.2 was built around multi-reference editing.
  • Pick the shape before you start. Each of the five ratios is a separate render, so commit to 16:9 or 9:16 up front rather than cropping later.
  • Take the still into video. A Flux 2 frame makes a strong start frame for Flux 3, Black Forest Labs' video model, which sits on the same Studio roster.

What We Have Not Tested

We have verified the release, the licences, the provider rates and the Studio's prices. We have not yet run a brief through Pro and Max side by side, or against Nano Banana Pro and GPT Image 2.5. When we do, the results go here with a date on them.

Flux 2 Questions, Answered

What is the difference between Flux 2 Pro and Flux 2 Max? Flux 2 Pro is Black Forest Labs' production model, built for high-volume work at a low price. Flux 2 Max is the highest-quality tier of the FLUX.2 family and the only one with grounding search, which lets it pull real-time information from the web into an image. In the AIVideos Studio, Flux 2 Pro costs 3, 6 or 15 credits at 1K, 2K or 4K, and Flux 2 Max costs 5 or 9 credits at 1K or 2K, with no 4K tier.

Is Flux 2 free? Partly. FLUX.2 [klein] 4B is released under Apache 2.0, so it is free to download and use, and FLUX.2 [dev] has open weights that are free for non-commercial use, with a paid licence for commercial work. Flux 2 Pro and Max are paid API models. In the AIVideos Studio, free accounts are topped up to 9 credits a day until their first purchase, which covers three Flux 2 Pro images at 1K, with a small watermark.

Is Flux 2 open source? Two versions have open weights. FLUX.2 [klein] 4B is Apache 2.0, which Black Forest Labs calls fully open. FLUX.2 [dev] is a 32B open-weight model under a non-commercial licence, and FLUX.2 [klein] 9B also carries the FLUX Non-Commercial licence. Flux 2 Pro, Max and Flex are closed models available through the API only.

When was Flux 2 released? Black Forest Labs announced FLUX.2 on 25 November 2025, launching Pro, Flex and the open-weight Dev at once and listing Klein as coming soon. Max was added to the family later.

Is Flux 2 better than Nano Banana Pro? We have not run a controlled side by side, so we will not name a winner. The clear difference is price: in the AIVideos Studio a Flux 2 Pro image costs 3 credits at 1K against 9 for Nano Banana Pro, and 15 against 18 at 4K. Nano Banana Pro takes up to 14 input images for an edit, Flux 2 up to 9.
