Flux 3 Max: What Changed From Flux 3, What It Costs, and When to Use It

Flux 3 Max is a post-trained version of Flux 3, Black Forest Labs' video foundation model, released on 19 October 2026. It makes 5 to 20 second clips with native audio from text, a start and end frame, or up to ten keyframes. In the Studio a 5-second clip costs 51 credits at 720p, the same as Flux 3. What the launch claims say, what they leave out, and when to pick Max over Flux 3. Checked on 23 October 2026.

Flux 3 Max: What Changed From Flux 3, What It Costs, and When to Use It

Flux 3 Max is the newest member of the Flux 3 video line. Black Forest Labs built the Flux 3 foundation model, and fal's research team post-trained this version with them. It went on sale on 19 October 2026. In the Studio it makes 5 to 20 second clips with native audio, and a 5-second clip costs 51 credits at 720p.

That price is exactly what Flux 3 costs at 720p. Same money, different model. So the real question is not whether Max is worth more. It is which of the two you should be using for a given job, and the answer is less obvious than "the newer one".

The Short Version

  • Built by: fal Research with Black Forest Labs, on the Flux 3 foundation model.
  • Released: 19 October 2026.
  • Length: 5 to 20 seconds per clip. Default 5.
  • Resolution: 720p or 1080p.
  • Inputs: text alone, a start frame with an optional end frame, or up to 10 keyframes pinned to exact positions.
  • Sound: native audio, on by default, with a switch to turn it off.
  • Studio price: 51 credits for 5 seconds at 720p, 87 at 1080p.
  • Not included: Flux 3's Draft tier, Extend and Enhance.

What the Launch Actually Claims

The launch release makes two headline claims. Both need a closer read.

Quality. In preliminary human-preference voting on the Artificial Analysis Video Arena, Flux 3 Max scored a 1,139 Elo across 4,868 votes for image-to-video. Flux 3 scored 1,089 on the same board. The release itself says the confidence intervals overlap with the other top models, which means "tied near the top", not "first". It is still a real step up from Flux 3. People chose between clips, rather than a lab metric scoring them, and Max won more often.

Speed. fal's own latency test put a 10-second clip at 10.95 seconds to generate, against 277.80 seconds for Seedance 2.5 and 126.44 seconds for the original Flux 3. That is where "22 times faster" comes from. The release gives no hardware, prompt, resolution or settings for that test. Independent commentary has pointed this out, and so will I. It is a vendor figure. Treat it as one.

There is one more thing the speed number does not tell you. Flux 3 Max has a reasoning setting, low or high, that controls how much effort it spends interpreting your prompt before it renders. The model's own documentation says high is slower. The Studio leaves it on high, the default, because a slower render that follows the brief beats a fast one that does not. We have not timed it yet.

How Flux 3 Max Works in the Studio

Flux 3 Max sits inside the Flux 3 tile as its own version. Pick Flux 3, then 3 Max on the Version row, then a mode.

Generate covers text alone and frame-led shots:

  • Write a prompt with no image for text-to-video.
  • Add a start frame to animate a still.
  • Add an end frame as well, and the shot travels between the two. Unlike Flux 3, Max takes the end frame on its image endpoint directly.
  • An end frame on its own also works. It is sent as a single keyframe on the last frame, so the shot resolves to your image.

Keyframes is the mode no other model family in the Studio offers. Pin up to 10 images to exact frame positions on a 24 frames-per-second timeline, and the clip hits each one on its beat. It is the closest thing to storyboarding a shot rather than describing it. Nothing else here does that.

The other settings:

  • Length: any whole second from 5 to 20.
  • Resolution: 720p or 1080p.
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 21:9 or 2:1. The two wide ratios are rare on this roster and useful for title sequences and banners.
  • Audio: on or off, same price.

What Flux 3 Max Costs

Credits per clip, taken from the Studio's live price table:

Length720p1080p
5 seconds5187
10 seconds102174
20 seconds204348

The provider is running a launch promotion until 7 November. The Studio's price is set on the regular rate, not the promotional one, so it will not jump when the promotion ends.

A free account receives 9 credits a day, so Flux 3 Max needs a credit pack. If you are price-testing an idea, Flux 3's Draft tier is still the cheapest way into this family, at 18 credits for 5 seconds.

Flux 3 or Flux 3 Max?

Same price per second at 720p and 1080p. So it comes down to the job.

Pick Flux 3 Max when:

  • the shot is a final, not an experiment
  • you need a start and an end frame together
  • you are building a keyframed sequence and want the stronger model holding the frames together

Stay on Flux 3 when:

  • you are iterating and want Draft at 18 credits a clip
  • you need to continue a clip with Extend
  • you want to draft cheaply and then Enhance the winner to 1080p

My pattern is simple. Find the shot in Flux 3 Draft, then render the final in Max. Draft tells you whether the idea works. Max is where you spend once it does. Never the other way round.

Briefing It Well

Flux 3 Max shares Flux 3's prompting habits, which are covered in more depth in our Flux 3 guide. The short list:

  1. One shot, one action. Max reasons about the prompt before it renders, so a clear single instruction gives it less to misread.
  2. Lead with the camera. "Slow dolly in at eye level" is a direction. "Cinematic" is a mood.
  3. Let keyframes carry the story. If the frames already show the beats, the prompt should describe motion and atmosphere between them, not repeat what each frame contains.
  4. Describe the sound in its own sentence when audio is on. Picture and sound read better as separate instructions.
  5. Check at 720p first. It costs 51 credits rather than 87 for 5 seconds, and the composition will not change at 1080p.

What We Have Not Tested

We have not run Flux 3 Max on a controlled prompt set yet, so this post makes no quality ranking of our own and does not confirm the speed claim. The quality figure above is a preliminary community vote, and the speed figure is the vendor's own. When we have run it on real client briefs, this post will say what we found.

Questions About Flux 3 Max

What is Flux 3 Max? Flux 3 Max is a video model built on Black Forest Labs' Flux 3 foundation model and post-trained by fal's research team in collaboration with Black Forest Labs. It was released on 19 October 2026. It makes 5 to 20 second clips with native audio, at 720p or 1080p, from text, a start image with an optional end image, or up to ten keyframes.

How much does Flux 3 Max cost? In the AIVideos Studio, a 5-second Flux 3 Max clip costs 51 credits at 720p and 87 credits at 1080p. A 10-second clip at 720p costs 102 credits, and the longest setting, 20 seconds at 1080p, costs 348 credits. The price is shown before you generate.

Flux 3 Max vs Flux 3: what is the difference? They cost the same per second at 720p and 1080p in the Studio. Max scored higher in a preliminary human-preference test and its image mode takes an end frame directly. Flux 3 keeps the cheap Draft tier, the Extend tool for continuing a clip and Enhance for upgrading a draft, none of which Max has.

Is Flux 3 Max really 22 times faster than Seedance 2.5? That is the launch claim, based on fal's own latency test: 10.95 seconds to make a 10-second clip, against 277.80 seconds for Seedance 2.5. The release gives no hardware, prompt or settings for the test, and no independent timing has been published, so treat it as a vendor figure.

Does Flux 3 Max have audio? Yes. Flux 3 Max generates sound with the picture, on by default, and the Studio has an Audio switch to turn it off. The price is the same either way.
