SeeDream 5 Lite vs Pro: Which Tier to Use, and What It Costs
SeeDream 5 Lite is ByteDance's fast, flat-priced image model and Pro is its layout and lettering specialist. Lite costs 3 credits an image at every size; Pro costs 5 at 1K, 10 at 2K and has no 4K. Checked against ByteDance and the API schemas on 30 September 2026.

SeeDream 5 comes in two tiers, and the difference is not simply cheap versus good. Lite is ByteDance's fast, general-purpose image model, and in the Studio it costs 3 credits an image whether you ask for 1K, 2K or 4K. Pro is the tier ByteDance built for dense layouts and lettering in several languages: 5 credits at 1K, 10 at 2K, and nothing above 2K.
So the short answer runs like this. For a batch of product shots, concept frames or social stills, start on Lite. If the image has to carry a real layout (a poster, an infographic, a menu, a label in Arabic or Spanish), start on Pro.
It is also the family people actually reach for. SeeDream 5 Lite was the most-used model in the AIVideos Studio in September 2026, video models included, and until today it had no page on this site. That gap is why this post exists.
Lite or Pro, in Four Lines
- Lite for volume. A flat 3 credits at every size, and up to six images per generation.
- Pro for text and structure. ByteDance pitches it at layouts, multilingual lettering and precise edits, at 5 or 10 credits.
- Lite for size. Its top tier asks for a 3,072-pixel long edge. Pro's asks for 2,048.
- Either for edits. Both accept up to 10 reference images, and references add nothing to the price.
What SeeDream 5 Actually Is
ByteDance's Seed team announced Seedream 5.0 Lite on 13 February 2026, as the successor to Seedream 4.0. The announcement is unusually direct about what changed. It is not resolution. It is not speed. It is reasoning. ByteDance describes "multi-step thinking to ensure realistic outputs that align with physical laws", real-time search for up-to-date subjects, and editing that tries to "infer the user's underlying intent like a human designer".
It is just as direct about the limits. In ByteDance's own words, Lite is "a relatively small model, and there is still room for improvement in structural stability, realism, and aesthetics." That is the maker speaking, not us. Read it before you ask Lite for a hero image a client will study closely.
Seedream 5.0 Pro followed, with ByteDance's announcement dated 8 July 2026. Its pitch is design work: turning "data, concepts, and dense text into professional layouts", point and lasso editing, layer separation, and text across "over ten commonly used languages", including right-to-left Arabic and Spanish accent marks. The API documentation puts it as "native text in 14 languages". The two sources count differently. Both describe a multilingual model. ByteDance again names its own weak spot: "there is still room to improve in finer-grained text rendering and pixel-level editing consistency."
One headline feature does not make it through. The Lite announcement leads with online search, but the model's API exposes no search switch on either tier, so the Studio cannot turn it on. If your brief depends on the model looking up a current subject, SeeDream 5 in the Studio will not do that for you.
What the Studio Runs
Verified against the API schemas and documentation for all four SeeDream 5 endpoints (text-to-image and edit, for Lite and Pro) on 30 September 2026:
| SeeDream 5 Lite | SeeDream 5 Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Sizes in the Studio | 1K, 2K, 4K | 1K, 2K |
| Largest image | 3,072px on the long edge | 2,048px on the long edge |
| Aspect ratios | 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4 | 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4 |
| Images per generation | Up to 6 | Up to 6 |
| Reference images for edits | Up to 10 | Up to 10 |
| Download format | Not selectable | JPEG or PNG |
| Studio price | 3 credits per image | 5 credits (1K) or 10 (2K) |
Two rows deserve a note.
Lite's 4K is 3,072 pixels, not 3,840. The Studio labels Lite's top tier 4K. What it requests is a 3,072-pixel long edge, the maximum the API documentation gives for Lite: "9MP (3072x3072)". The schema's wording is looser, allowing up to 4096x4096 total pixels, but the Studio stays within the documented figure. That is a big image. It is not a UHD frame, and we would rather say so than let a label do the talking.
Pro stops at 2K. The endpoint caps Pro at 2048x2048 total pixels (and asks for at least 1024x1024), so there is no larger tier to offer. If you need the bigger file and the image carries no complicated lettering, Lite is the tier that gets you there.
What Each Image Costs
Every figure below is the live Studio price in credits, shown in the console before you press Generate.
| Tier | 1K | 2K | 4K | Six images at the top tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SeeDream 5 Lite | 3 | 3 | 3 | 18 |
| SeeDream 5 Pro | 5 | 10 | Not offered | 60 |
Four things follow from that table.
- Lite does not charge for size. 1K and 4K cost the same 3 credits, so unless you want a smaller file, render at the top tier.
- Pro doubles at 2K. Settle the wording and layout at 1K, where a miss costs 5 credits, and move to 2K once the prompt is reliably coming back right.
- References are free. Up to 10 reference images on an edit, and the price does not move.
- Free accounts get three a day. A free Studio account refills to 9 credits once a day, which is three Lite images. Free-tier images carry a small aivideos.eu watermark until you buy any credit pack.
The Render Ledger sets every model's provider cost side by side, images included, and what AI video costs per second does the same job for the video models.
How to Brief It
A caveat first. We have no observed prompting notes of our own for either tier yet. The Studio's Prompt Director (1 credit a pass) carries only the published guidance for SeeDream, labelled as provider guidance rather than something we have confirmed. So the examples below show how we would structure a brief from that guidance and from what the endpoints accept. They are examples of shape, not outputs we are showing you.
The published guidance for this family is short. Two sentences cover it. SeeDream is positioned as intent-driven: state what you want plainly, edits included, rather than engineering strings of keywords. Over-engineering is the thing to avoid.
A Lite batch (volume work). Write it as a sentence a photographer would follow:
A matte black ceramic coffee cup on a pale oak table by a window,
soft morning light from the left, a thin curl of steam, shallow
depth of field, shot from slightly above, empty space on the right
for a headline.
What we would pick: Lite, the 4K tier, 16:9, six images. That costs 18 credits.
A Pro layout (lettering that has to be right). Put every word that must appear in quotation marks, and say where it goes:
A minimalist poster for a jazz night. Deep navy background, one
saxophone drawn in thin gold line art at the centre. At the top,
the title "Blue Hour Sessions" in a tall condensed serif. At the
bottom, in smaller type, "Friday 14 November, 9pm", and below it
the same line in Spanish: "Viernes 14 de noviembre, 21:00".
What we would pick: Pro at 1K while you check the lettering (5 credits), then 2K for the version you keep (10 credits). Quoting the exact words is Google's published advice for Nano Banana rather than ByteDance's for SeeDream. It costs nothing, though, and it removes any doubt about what should be spelled.
An edit (one reference in, one change out). Say what changes and what must stay:
Keep the bottle, the label and the lighting exactly as they are.
Replace the kitchen background with a plain warm-grey studio
sweep, and add a soft shadow under the bottle.
What we would pick: Lite or Pro with one reference image. The price is the same as a plain generation.
One practical note on refusals. Both SeeDream endpoints run a safety checker by default, and the Studio does not switch it off. If a prompt is refused, rephrase it rather than resubmitting the same words.
When Another Model Fits Better
SeeDream is not the only image family in the Studio, and it is not always the right one.
- Nano Banana 2 costs 5 credits at 1K, 8 at 2K and 10 at 4K. Pick it for extreme banner shapes (4:1, 1:4, 8:1 and 1:8), or when an edit needs more than 10 input images, since it takes up to 14.
- GPT Image 2.5 starts at the same 3 credits. Its Sunburst variant is documented for edits where exactly one thing changes and everything else has to hold.
- Stills for video. If the image will become a start frame, choose the video model first and match its shape. LTX 2.5, for example, generates 16:9 or 9:16 only.
What We Have Not Tested
Plainly: we have checked the schemas, the size limits, the list prices and the Studio's credit ladder for both tiers. We have not run a controlled comparison of Lite against Pro, or of either against Nano Banana or GPT Image 2.5. We also have no measured first-try hit rate for any of them. Nothing above is a quality verdict.
Three open questions in particular:
- Whether Pro's multilingual lettering holds up beyond English on our own prompts, in Arabic especially.
- What pixel size Lite actually returns at its 1K tier. The API schema says requests below 2560x1440 total pixels are scaled to fit, so the file may be larger than the label suggests.
- Whether the reasoning ByteDance describes in its own apps behaves the same way through the API.
When we have answers, they go here, dated.
Questions About SeeDream 5
What is the difference between SeeDream 5 Lite and Pro? Lite is ByteDance's fast, general-purpose tier and Pro is built for dense layouts and text in several languages. In the AIVideos Studio, Lite costs 3 credits an image at 1K, 2K or 4K, while Pro costs 5 credits at 1K and 10 at 2K and has no 4K tier. Both take up to 10 reference images for edits and make up to six images per generation.
How much does SeeDream 5 cost? In the AIVideos Studio, SeeDream 5 Lite costs 3 credits per image at every size, and SeeDream 5 Pro costs 5 credits at 1K or 10 credits at 2K. Reference images for edits add nothing to the price, and the cost is shown before you generate.
Can SeeDream 5 make 4K images? Lite's top tier, which the Studio labels 4K, asks for a 3,072-pixel long edge, the 9MP maximum documented for Lite. That is a big image, but it is not a full 3,840-pixel UHD frame. Pro's largest size in the Studio is 2,048 pixels on the long edge.
Can SeeDream 5 edit images? Yes. Both tiers have an edit endpoint that accepts up to 10 reference images, and the API schema says that if more are sent, only the last 10 are used. In the Studio the price stays the same however many references you add.
Can I use SeeDream 5 in the AIVideos Studio? Yes. SeeDream 5 Lite and SeeDream 5 Pro are both in the Studio's image picker, priced in credits before you generate, with no subscription. Lite was the most-used model in the Studio in September 2026.
Can I use SeeDream 5 images commercially? Under our terms, images made with purchased credits are delivered watermark-free with a full commercial licence, and you own the outputs to the extent the law allows. Free-tier images carry a small aivideos.eu watermark and are meant for evaluation. Copyright in purely AI-generated work varies by country and is still developing, so nobody can promise it is protectable everywhere.
Where to Start
Open the Studio, pick SeeDream 5 and leave it on Lite for your first batch. At 3 credits an image it shares the lowest image price on the roster, which makes it the cheapest way to find out whether the model suits your work. The full wording of the licence is in our terms.
If you would rather hand over the brief entirely, our production services exist for exactly that.
